compressor question for guru
Starting to narrow things down with my recalcitrant Rolair compressor
I'm in the habit of turning the compressor off at the wall between coats - Shutting off the power while it is running doesn't happen a lot but it does occasionally.
Apparently I read today that when the machine is running turning off the power is very very bad.
it stopped working earlier today - I heard the click of the pressure valve but the motor didn't kick in - turned off the power power button up down up down to no avail. I then drained the tank turned the power on and lo and behold she roared into life
a bit later I shut off the power while motor was running [oops] and of course now it wont start - this was before I find out how bad this practice is
this afaik is the second compressor I have probably destroyed like this - both were oil less machines.
Could any of the machine guru types around here give me any idea what sort of damage I'm looking at here.
heres my little mate

When a compressor reaches its rated pressure the control turns off the power as well as releasing the pressure in the plumbing on the output side of the compressor.
Turning off just the power without releasing the pressure will result in the motor trying to start against the stored pressure.
Most motors will stall and possibly pop the circuit breaker but do this too often and the starter winding will release the magic smoke and you will go shopping.

Ok thanks for the info -
I understand what is happening now - never turn it off at the wall - turn it off at the off on switch.
I had an old GMC that kept letting the switch pull right off the machine so I got into the habit of leaving it in on position and using the wall switch -
that old clunker ran for years and I gave it away in the end as it was too noisy - never ever did it not start -
Dont want any magic smoke bbbrrrrray c
