    Default Direction of rotation

    G'day all

Wonder if there are any easy answers.

At the H&F sale, I bought a 1hp motor to replace the burnt out 550W one in my bandsaw.

After much fiddling to fit it in, I fired it up, to find it runs the wrong way!!!

Seems to me to be contrary to convention, as my lathe, and drill press, as well as the old b/s motor run in the opposite direction.

Now, motor is single phase, 1440 rpm etc., which is right.

I know the trick with 3 phase of reversing 2 phases, but my question is, is there a simplistic way of reversing rotation on a single phase motor, or do I have to go through the business of returning to H&F, and finding a (more expensive) replacement elsewhere?

    regards
    Alastair

I,m no expert, some motors can be reversed some can't should ask a friendly sparky to have look

Hi Alastair, Just going through this process myself, am getting a reverse switch fitted to a Single phase 1440rpm for a multi tool machine, where I need to be able to reverse the motor depending on the application I want.

Short answer is it costs me 150.00 to get the wiring inside the motor done and 80 for the switch. So my guess would be your best bet is to return the motor and swap it for the one that goes they way you want it to.

    Cheers

this happened to a mate some years ago it was actually on a nova 3000 lathe came from the factory rotating the wrong way. The sparkie called the motor a universal something or other and it literally only took a couple of minutes to fix

Alastair, you haven't said, or I missed it, but which direction does your motor rotate in?

If looking at the shaft front on, does it rotate clockwise or ant-clockwise?

    Hi Fred,

Standing in front of the shaft, looking at the motor, it is rotating clockwise. All my other motors rotate a/c viewed from the same place.

I have a HUGE (18''long x 10" dia) 70 year old single phase induction motor, which was on my old lathe. That certainly was reversible, by reconfiguring the connection of 4 field wirings to the 2 of domestic 220 single phase. I am hoping that this is the same.

I'll have another look this am. If I can open cover plate without betraying myself I'll get some more info. Failing that it will be back to H&F this week for either correction or return.

    regards
    Alastair

I'd change all of your other motors Alastair.

Isn't clockwise normal? The same as a car engine and small stationary motors? Sorry if I'm wrong, I'm going by memory.

This got me intrigued, I asked the question because I was fairly sure my lathe motor runs clockwise.

Well, went out to the shed, lathe-clockwise, bandsaw-clockwise, disk/belt sander-counter clockwise, dust extractor-counter clockwise.

    So, take your pick!

It looks like you have to specify direction of rotation when buying an electric motor.

Yep. It's an interesting one. I was under the impression that clockwise was standard. I dunno ....

    just checked mine.

    bandsaw - clockwise
    lathe - anticlockwise
    table saw - clockwise
    disk sander - anticlockwise

strange i just asumed they were all the same.

Last time I bought a motor, I bought it from a motor repair shop. The owner asked me which direction it had to turn and, seeing the motor was set to turn the wrong way he took of the switch and adjusted the wiring and replaced the switch and the moror now turns the other way.

Took him 5 minutes to reverse the direction so it's not a big deal.

Isn't which way it runs actually just a matter of which end the shaft sticks out of?

Does a bench-grinder run clockwise or anticlockwise?
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

I am with Weisy on this one. Depends which way motor is mounted.

It is a matter of reversing 2 wires under the cover but as it is new, ring H&F.

They may give you the go ahead to get an electrician to reverse it.

I get my brother to do it but he is a bit far away from you.
