    Default Doing the hole thing

On the weekend I had the pleasure of using one of these.

to cut some holes in some cypress pine 20/30 mm deep OMG.
No smoke, chips flying out like big fat pencil shaving, shavings.
I was having a ball I even drilled a couple of holes just for the shear fun of it can you believe that.
And this was done with just a cordless drill.

Compared to these ones always smoked even when used in the drill press at a medium speed.
In there pathetic defence they were cheapish set I think about $90 AU
    (Maybe there's my answer)

I use to hate using them well still do.
They have never been used much so I thought they wouldn't need sharpening.
Tho maybe there not that sharp to begin with.
I had even considered putting them in my lathe and grinding the walls a little of with a diamond sharpening stone.
Because they use to jam quite a bit.
    Thinking that may help.

So firstly what are the ones in the first pic called my mate told me they were Forsner bits.
But I thought the ones I had were called a Forsner bit.

So a quick search reveals there both called Forsner bits so now I'm confused.
Also tools like these I would prefer to buy in sets not just one at a time(in metric to)
Because I just like do that [emoji3].
But I cant seem to find any.
A few individual ones a round 31 mm for kitchen hinges that's it
So please help a fellow tool junkie get one more fix please.
    Cheers Matt

Forstner bits have a scoring lip that goes around the bit (like the second pic, but solid, not a sawtooth profile)
The one you used is a hinge boring bit. Carbitool have them in a few different sizes - 30-50mm in 5mm increments i think

Kinda. The hinge boring bits are a sub-set of forstner bits

Yes, that's it Matt. Hinge bits are very similar but are specifically for very abrasive materials like chipboard & mdf that are probably melamine coated. Hence why they are TC tipped. That means they probably can't be sharpened to the same level as HSS or tool steel, and so won't deliver as clean a hole cut, but it's horses for courses - they are designed for kitchen cupboard doors.

A good sharp tool steel forstner produces a beautifully crisp hole in "proper" timber.

I could stand correcting but the other day I was in Bunnings and I'm sure I saw Diablo forstner bits on the shelf. They dont always list everything they sell on their web site.
