Drill Press motor electrical question
Hi,
I have a Stubbins 12 speed drill press (1978 vintage) and it's powered by a Frejoth 3/4hp 240v single phase motor. I am having issues with the motor and need to purchase a new start capacitor for it but have run into a confusing problem. The existing start capacitor is "200 uF ( microfarads) - 125 volts" in an aluminium case with two terminals at the top. I've been looking online and can only find Chinese made capacitors of that rating on ebay, which I don't trust. In Australia our power supply to my workshop is 240 volts, so I'm wondering if I can opt for a new start capacitor rated at "200uF - 250 volts"? I believe you can safely go to a higher voltage than your original capacitor, but would going for a capacitor with twice the voltage rating damage the motor?
Can anyone offer some advice on this please.

A 200uF - 250v capacitor will be fine as it is the capacitance and not the voltage that is critical. the higher voltage rating on the cap will not have any effect on your motor. BTW the locally sourced caps are probably from China.

Just be aware that the higher voltage capacitor may be physically larger for mounting considerations.
