Default What equipment would you need to make trellises?

    Hi,
Can anyone please advise me on the equipment required to make trellis screens?
I have 5 large trellis screens that need to be repainted but they will have to be sanded down first which is going to be a major job.
Would it be easier to just make new screens with a table saw and router?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

I just did some quick "back-of-the-envelope" calculations working off 2.1m x 2.1m trellises and you're looking at some 250m (give or take) of slats... Are you really sure you want to make new ones?

EDIT: Just re-did the maths properly and I was waaay off... 2.1 x 2.1 works out to over 600m and 2.4 x 2.4 is around 700m

Wow! Didn't realize just how much timber is involved. [emoji4]

To make the trellis, once you have cut and profiled the battens they are laid out in a flat bed jig of blocks that hold everything in the right crisscross pattern. It is then just a matter of shooting a nail into every crossover. Looks fast in a production run, but I suspect it's not worth the time and energy for just a couple of panels.

I'm with China on this one. Trellis is generally made of pretty crap timber and my view would be that 'close enough is good enough'.

How can anyone have that much lattice without growing a passionfruit vine on it?

Maybe some people don't like eating mouse t*rds.
Unless you're able to get a large amount of 35 or 45 mm pine for virtually nix, and be prepared to rip it down with a saw bench, run it through a drum sander or thicknesser, to smooth it for painting, then paint the strips, and then use a brad gun to staple it together, I wouldn't bother. For the cost and effort of making it, I'd buy it ready made, I priced a bundle of battens once, 120 metres $20.00
    A ready made panel $27.00
Probably an easier way, would be to cut a block of wood to fit in between the slays, wrap sandpaper around it and rub in between the slats, you only need to remove the flaky paint to prepare it.

Found this: Sanding and Polishing Drill Accessories
Abrasive nylon brushes; stick one in a cordless drill and go for it.

Not quite sure how you get to 600 lm, my maths says about 110 lm on a 42 mm grid

I simply counted the number of pieces in the pic.

36 pieces per side, divide by 2 to get number of full diagonals per side, times 2 for both sides of a panel. So we're at 36 full diagonal lengths per panel.
Diagonal in a 2.1m square is 2.97m - call it 3m to make life easy - times 36 is 108m per panel, times 5 panels is 540m +10% for miscuts/defects/waste is 594 lm

EDIT: Just noticed the 2 panels at the very end, so now we're over 800lm based on a 2.1m square

I had trellis as a skirt around the posts beneath my summer house.
Noble thought but the biggest, most tedious concept to maintain and a nightmare to paint by any means.
Self-abuse, I think. Was easier in the long run to sell the house.

I'd try a pressure washer first to see if cleaning is possible.
If so, who gets to clean up all the paint flakes?
I can buy a 4' x 8' panel of pressure treated lath lattice for $16.50. For my time, replacement might be less grief.
What other choices for privacy have you got?
