Default Knives for Dewalt DW 735 Thicknesser

During the past six months or so I have purchased a Dewalt DW 735 13 inch planner, its is a great machine and I love the finish it produces. The problem is (And I know other peaple have this problem) that the two sets of knives that they supply with it seem to be not up to the quality of the rest of the machine and dont last long at all.

Im aware that there are a number of options available (Including helical head which I can afford) . Im considering purchasing a set of carbide tipped blades but would prefere to get them her in Australia rather than send overseas.

Can any one recommend a retaler in this country who can supply these knives at a reasonable price for me.

    Appreciate any help thanks.

I could not find a local supplier, so I ended up buying the thicker blades from Infinity in the US, before the exchange rate has made them too expensive. I think a replacement set would be close to $A200 delivered now, and that makes the spiral head cost $600+ look good. Mind you, the inserts can cost up to $10 each, from memory, but there is a local bloke ( contributor on this forum) who is selling them much cheaper

Thanks for that Dengy. If I you know where I can buy a spiral head for $600.00 would really appreciate it if you let me know even if its from the states. I have a family member who travels over there all the time and would be able to bring it back for me.

Try getting a quote from Wood Craft Supplies here in Qld, for their Shelix cutter head made in the USA or their Taiwanese? CTS replica cutterhead. Alternatively, look at the Original Manufacturer's website - just Google "Byrd Shelix "

Had a similar problem with my ledacraft planer/thicknesser, garbage 2 sided disposable blades supplied 10" currently using 3 sets of 3mm standard blades made from a set of 32'' blades that were worn too much for their use in the sawmill thicknesser (would love access to that occasionally) had to grind off the plips that held the disposable blades in place which makes setting harder-but can now use standard blades. By the way every single attempt to contact the manufacturer/ distributor remained unanswered. (still a good machine for the price) Helical heads sound more than nice but $$$ as a starving artisan -well.
By the way anyone who does the old house framing thing have experience of steel Vs carbide when it finds that bit of nail that you didn't. Mostly cost-wise.

Thanks for that wood spirit still trying to sort this out.The problems you are having with contacting manufacturers/distributors is far from uncommon I can understand how they can spend so much time effort and money advertising their product and then consistently ignore requests from potential customers who want to spend money with them.
