Woodfast 12" disc sander
One thing really annoys me about this machine is it comes with a 60 grit sanding disc. It is too coarse, it leaves a very rough surface. It is just not acceptable.
To me a disc sander serves 2 purposes.
1) for fine tuning mitre joint/ scarf joints, or
2) for sanding the outside of a curve
Either case you want the finish to be smooth enough so it requires no extra work. Why they choose 60 grit is just beyond me, and it p1$$e$ me right off. Or am I missing something here?
Removing the bastard was a real pain. It took me ages to remove all the double sided tape. Bastard, why do they do that???
Also, why the hell do you need a mitre track on a disc sander? I can't think of a single use of it.Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

Many people use disc sanders for shaping and require quik removal of stock, not many use a disk sander for a final finish, mitre feature is used mainly for truing anles e.g. picture frames.

Really? Do the the majority use it to remove stock? I would think the sensible way to do it is to remove stock on a bandsaw and use the disc sander to get a clean edge.
Anyway I think a 150 grit would be a bit more suitable.
Don't you just clamp a piece of wood 45 degree to the disc anyway?Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

Removing the Sanding Disc.
Hi Wongo,
I take it the Disc was Aluminum. If so, & I'm not 100% sure, but I think a bit of Turps may have made the job a bit easier.
Yes, 60G. was a bit to much, & although mine is only 6in. I use it occasionally to either remove waste, & the mitre is very useful for getting angles right.Regards,
issatree.

Disc sander
For my disc sander I removed the original sheet once it was worn out and replaced it.
The replacement was a sheet with adhesive on one side and half of Velcro like on the other side. The replacement sheets just stick easily and peel off very easily for replacement
Cheers

That Sander Again.
Hi Again Wongo,
Have just remembered that a friend had similar Sander, but used Disc Cement.
So he had 5 Sandpaper Discs of different Grits, 2 of each were stuck together.
They pull apart quite easily.
The other one Sticks on the Al / Disc.
This D / C. does not go hard, but stays sticky for ages.
I think I bought my last tin at Blackwoods, but lost it in the Garage somewhere.
Hope this will make it better.Regards,
issatree.

I currently have 100 grit on mine and find it clogs quite easily. I'm thinking of going back to 80 grit.
The disc I use for roughing out. The belt gives a better finish.

I have finally put the newly acquired sander and the replacement disc to a good use.
This is a lamp table top made of MDF, Lancewood top and ebony edges. The joints look seamless, so I am very happy.Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

You've done it now Wongo - I was recently notified that the Woodfast sander is no longer being made, so you got one of the last batches to be imported.
If you don't like yours, you can drag it up the hill to my place & I will give it a home. ;-)

Its not a bad machine I reckon. The table is not flat but it isn't a big deal. If you really want it you can have it for $500.

GPW have a 'new' 12 inch disk sander, I might have to make a few enquiries.
Or build my own.
