Default Looking at a Vacuum pump

Now i've got my own workshop sorted, i'm looking at getting a vacuum bag press pump,

I used one that Tom built while i was down at Sturt, but i can't recall much about the actual pump, except it was home made, was a great machine and it ran nonstop for glue ups overnight.

I've found this one from the States, it's 240 Volt 5 CFM Vacuum Pump for EVS Vacuum Press Kits

    Anyone used this before???

I am temped to buy a Festool Vac clamp unit and use it, although i'm not sure is the Festool motor can handle long running periods.

There doesn't seem much to choose from, there are some adapted Vacpress models here, but the price is ...

I'd be interested in what others have used of the shelf.

    Cheers,

    Hi Bryn,

Any reason why you need a 5 cfm unit?
Only asking as I use a 2 cfm pump.
I laminate 4 mm thick veneers that are three metres long, onto surfboard blanks with mine.
The pump handles the compound curves with no problem.
I usually set up before going to work and switch off about 9 hrs later when I get home.
I thought I'd post this as the pump only cost $150, so you might save a few $.
    Good luck with it anyway.

    Hi Bryn,

i haven't purchased yet, but someone pointed me towards Bettervac.com.au and they (Bettervac) suggested this one would be appropriate:

    Might be worth a look?

    Thanks guys,

I'll have to wait a few months for a vacuum pump.

i have decided to put in a new Mezzanine floor on the new industrial shed i've got on contract

And that will eat up the funds and more than i had put aside for the vacuum press.

Thanks for the offer Chris, but now my vac money is spent

Having said that, I emailed Bettervac, and that model is $400 plus GST, so if anyone wants to know what these cost.

    Hey Mase,

I would like to know as well, $150 isn't much.

Just search refrigeration vacuum pump on ebay, you get a 1.8cfm unit for about $100.
    Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Yea Cliff beat me to it...

I got mine on ebay a while back, maybe 18 months ? on ebay

Cliffs' suggestion " refrigeration vacuum pump" is the best search term,

I reckon if you put "woodworking" in front of vacuum pump the price goes up !

They are pretty simple machines, just make sure you have enough oil in them .

    Cheers,
