    Default Mortise Machine Drill Bits

To anyone who has a chisel mortise machine will know of the struggle to lift the square cutter back up after taking the initial plunge, so I'm wondering instead of using the hollow/square cutter bit has any one replace the square cutter and bit and just used a normal HHS drill bit (or something similar) in their machine ?

Two things that you can try. 1. Polish the four sides and get rid of all the machine marks that are normally on the chisels and that will make them slide easier. The machine marks act like a vice and stop the chisel coming out. 2. Rub a little bit if wax on the four sides for lubrication.

If you can polish the four sides like you do when sharpening the back of a chisel so that they become more slippery the bit will go in easier and come out easier.

The other thing to do is to make sure that there are no dags on the chisel anywhere where it goes into the mortise as is sometimes the case.

    Good luck

Take a series of shallow cuts rather than full depth cuts
