pedestal to bench drill press
I have a Sherwood pedestal drill press and its OK for what I want / use it for but really dont need the full height. Now wifey has jumped on the budget saying no more bl***y tools, I thought if I sold it I could then get a bench one, but
1 no one in this area wants one
2 bench drill presses S/H only appear to be Ryobi and thats a worry
however in the early hours I had a crazy dream and need your advice......
could I dismantle the pedestal, get the main 'shaft' cut down and possibly the cast iron (?) upright as well and this convert to a bench drill press.
Its a smaller capacity and at least 15 years old but 12 of those been sitting in storageI would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

Physically I don’t see why you can’t cut it down and just shorten it, BUT (and a big but) now that is shorter, the press will be significantly more top heavy than previously. So if you plan in bolting it down to a solid bench, perhaps ok. If no plans to bolt it and make it a movable item, I’d consider the balance to be an issue

I'm a little confused as to why...
Is it a restriction in space that you're having? as people who don't need all the height generally build a cabinet down under to make use of the space, which overcomes the issue of it "taking up space"

exactly that reason more useable space without a 'pedestal or something intruding on drawer or cabinet space.

Build a cabinet around the base and column. Best of both worlds.

We have some heavy duty drills at work that have the same head and also the same base plate size. Some are pedestal and some are bench - no top heavy problems with the bench units.

I agree with the concept of building a cupboard around the base and column.
While you can cut it the column you can't really put it back together.

I take your point gentlemen but my cabinetry around a drill press would leave room for improvement so thats why I am thinking the other way.
