I think BobL has comprehensively answered this question for me. I would imagine that the embroidery frames aren't particularly big, so a 20 litre capacity tank may do the job for you with a couple of runs of the compressor to top up the air tanks during the sanding process.

I'd be doing the frames by hand - you might even finish before the compressor got up to pressure?

I suppose it all depends on what you mean by "occasional sanding".
On BobL's numbers, "occasional" would equate to running an air sander for around 5 seconds at at time, every minute or so.

Which is how dentists typically use their small compressors.

perhaps, I should have classified 5 seconds spent sanding every minute or so as "heavy" use

Hi Guys, would anyone recommend a smallish. super quiet, oil free compressor that I can buy in Mew Zealand. I know nothing about them, or how they work, just need one for blowing dust from the lathe and other tools . Also for a nail gun. What else for I need other than an air hose, electric plug and an air gun? At some stage I will probably want to run an air brush as well. Under $800 would be great. I live in a retirement village so no noisy machines or liquid nitrogen.

Its a bit hard to recommend stuff from Australia as we have no idea what is available in your area. From you projected usage patterns it sounds like you could get away with a 1HP 20L system from your local hardware.

The compressor mentioned at the start of this thread could be a start.
Other names are Clisby and Pilotair.
If you want really quiet you may need to look at a medical type compressors.
