Default Which segmented lunch box thicknesser?

As far as I know there are 3 options for a 330mm lunchbox thicknesser with a segmented head under $1000.
One from Sherwood and one from Carbatec about the same price.
Plus one from Hare and Forbes which is a little cheaper. They all seem to have 26 cutters with 2 faces.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between them and does it matter?

The H&F is physically the lightest which may be important to you if you need to move it around a lot.

The Carbatec is the heaviest which may be important to you as mass is good for stability and reducing vibration.

The Sherwood has a granite plattern which lowers the C of G and provides a flat surface which can never warp or get chips jammed underneath.

Both the H&F and the CT come with 26 14mm square HSS cutters but can be upgraded to TC for about $110 from SJE tools

The Sherwood has 26 unique-ish 14mm X 27mm cutters; more blade is presented with each revolution. So far only Timbecon appear to sell the cutters but the standard ones are TC so will outlast HSS considerably.

All three can be connected to either 2 or 4" dust extraction but the sherwood and HF have a considerably reduced bore before the outlet. The Sherwood appears to have a built in fan to aid chip ejection; the CT is spectacularly good when hooked up to a 4" extractor.

Silver, orange or blue? Does it need to match your shed decor?

To be frank I don't feel there is lot between them; every plus for one is negated by another aspect and vice versa. Personally I have the CT; purchased because it was on sale. Aust Wood review did a shootout between the CT & HF last year, only a couple of weeks ago forum member Planemaker provided a review of the Sherwood in these forums; sorry; you'll have to search for the thread yourself because it's late and I need to sign off!

    as to does it matter

many consider the DeWalt 2 speed, 3-knife planner to be equivalent if not superior, to the "own brand" segmented head lunch box machines.

Yes I read the Sherwood review thanks. There is also a review of the HF one on YouTube. It's the comparison that you provided that I was looking for. Thanks very much.

Thanks. Although I'm sceptical of that particular claim.

The DeWalt with helical head and tables etc ends up being twice the price so it's probably out of the question.

To get a true evaluation, I would suggest you line up some visits to see the finishes like I did. I'm more then happy with my 2nd hand Dewalt with straight blades and yes, I have compared it to the HF unit with segmented head. The 15" unit at the Mens shed with a proper helical head - now that's a different story BUT a quick hand sand after the Dewalt on finish, and it's difficult to tell the difference.
