What Sort of Stud Finder?
I would like to build a wall-mounted timber rack in my small workshop & need to locate the studs to fasten the rack to.
I searched the web for a stud finder but the choice is quite bewildering & would appreciate advice on the selection of of a reliable finder.
All suggestions will be gratefully received!
Cheers,
Yvan

I use a Stanley fat max, found it quite reliable for pipes and electrical. For studs I still can’t stop using a rare earth magnet, slide it across the wall and it sticks to the screw spot, then use a level to go up or down. Also good at finding the metal brace straps.
cheers

Back on the Renovate Forum all the builders used to recommend the Franklin Sensors brand.
Professional Stud Finders | Stud Sensor | Stud Detector
I bought this one PROSENSOR 710 - Franklin Sensors and have been very happy with the results.

I've had (and thrown out) numerous Stanley stud finders over the years - all universally hopeless at finding timber studs, or give all sorts of false indications.
Finally went with one of the Franklin ones after reading many, many reviews.
PROSENSOR T9 - Franklin Sensors
It just works. Completely accurate, no false indications, and easy to precisley locate the edges of studs.

I have tossed out a number of stud finders, none ever seemed to be sensitive enough all the time. I like the idea of the rare earth magnet. I now use a metal detecting pin pointer (I have it for metal detecting, the hobby, and checking timber). It works very well for finding studs, electrical cable and metal plumbing. For instance I used it the other day to check for plumbing in a concrete block wall where I had to drill for screws

+1 for the Franklin. In terms of time and frustration saved per $ spent it’s a no brained.
