    Default Table for SCMS - WIP

    I was in Bunnies buying some shelf brackets for the shed when I spied a sale of damaged bits and pieces including a 900mm kitchen cupboard under 1/2 price - small chip in one corner.
    As I had already utilised another damaged unit over 12 months ago for a router table, I thought why not build a pigeon pair.

    I placed the scms on a floating panel supported by the adjusting legs that come with the cupboard so I would be able to adjust the saw to suit the side supports.

    Worked out great using an aluminium extrusion and a sheet of paper to check alignment.

    Ran some rubber strip around the sides to seal it to the mounting plate so no dust can get to the lower sections.
    The 60o to the right needed a notch of its own

    In the process of running some cuts to work out dust spray directions before building the dust shield.

    After that's done, I'll build some drawers as I really need some storage for the smaller items one tends to accumulate.

    Back on to it today. One requirement is for the dust hood to be adjustable so the saw table and hood can sit right up to the wall when not being used but be extended when in use.
    Built a rough base and mounted it on drawer runners then a quick mock up of the back and sides with cardboard. Cardboard still needs to be cut down in some areas and raised in others.
    The base will be hinged and lock into place when the hood is extended.

    The basic hood with runners is now up and working. Hood slides back and forward with the saw. Captures most of the dust without any extraction at the moment. That's designed but not built
    The biggest amount of escaped chips/dust is when first cutting a very wide piece of timber as the chips spray out to the right at about 45o. The hood can't come further forward due to the fence line and the saw is cutting 250mm in front of the fence. When the extraction is connected and the front louvred are fitted, it should reduce this but it will be hard to eliminate it.

    Almost at the end of the SCMS table and extraction hood build. I was using legs to support the swing up table but they were too cumbersome so I just went with some latches to attach the hood to the table when it's in the upright position.
    Fitted the dust extractor adaptor to the back of the hood and made a baffle arrangement to direct the suction across the width of the hood.

    As you can see, the back panel is screwed on. I took some flow measurements as I built up the baffle to make sure I wasn't restricting flow and to also ensure I was getting a reasonably even draw across the 650mm wide slot.

    This is the unit pulled out from the wall ready to use

    Table dropped down, hood pulled forward, so it can be stowed back against the wall when not in use.

    The extraction system does not remove all of the dust BUT there is nothing forward of the hood at all, so all the dust is going back into the hood. With the 50mm hose connected to the saw outlet pipe and the extractor at the back running, approx. 90% of the dust is being removed which is great compared to the mess when it was on the stand. At the end of the cutting session, I disconnect the hose from the Saw outlet and vacuum up any remaining dust inside the hood.

    A couple of things still to do. The attachment of the swing up table to the hood is a bit cumbersome although it only takes about 30 seconds to attach but you have to reach inside the hood. Looking at an external attachment. Also I will play with some flow directing panels in the hood to see if I can pick up more of the dust.

    I still need to make some drawers for the lower section of the cupboard but at least the unit is now useable.
