TOUGH luck - my "new" drill press
This drill press was donated to our Mens Shed. . It was in generally good condition except for the electricals. The motor was decrepit and dangerous , the wiring the same. It had a foot switch bolted to the base that was still OK but we decided to replace it with a push button switch. The motor and wiring were all replaced. The spindle bearings were in excellent order and the quill has no wear to speak of.
This is a big , heavy device. It has a cast iron base that must weigh 50 Kg. The column is solid steel . The whole thing must be pushing 100 Kg.
The management decided that it was not needed at the Shed and should be sold. I wanted it but had no room for it and really no use for it.
There were no takers after a couple of months. Today the management decided it was going to the scrap metal merchant down the road.
NO WAY! said I.
It is now in my shed. I am happy but something has to go to make room - I don't know what as yet. Perhaps I'll just move all my stock of special pen blanks, small bits of mulga , beefwood, etc. etc. into the spare bedroom....

What a great find. Tough were a WA manufacturer, I bought one of their lathes more than 20years ago and have been very happy with it. They made their own castings and weathered them before machining for better stability (I was told) , I have a brochure which shows several machines with the distinctive curved shapes, but the drill press was not listed however picture of a chisel morticer looks similar. I'm envious. Have you checked the runout for wear?

Good pick up
Those old machines are great - really solid and usually very well built.
Should last you a lifetime.

Nice save - scrap metal merchants and some powers that be have a lot to answer for.
