Default Vicmarc slow speed grinders going

    Vicmarc slow speed grinders going,

My bday is due soon and this year I wanted a Vicmarc slow speed grinder, I had a touch and play of Chris Parks, at one of David the turning cowboys GTG fitted with CBN wheels.
And decided there and then that I wanted one.
    Needed one actually,

So I begged ,screamed ,chucked a temper trantrum made promises I never keep and while I was busy on the tools today the boss lady called a few supplies, no we have none left or were out of stock.
WHAT the was my reaction while standing on top of the ladder feeling like a proud rooster, knowing I to was soon going to be a slow boy grinder.

Boss lady calls Vicmarc head office
The Vicmarc slow speed grinder is to be discontinued, thats what Sally was told apparently.
Reason if they order 50 they chuck out five for not meeting there Quilty control. Not sure if that’s just the main casting or something else.
Also this is what I’ve been told from Sally who spoke to a gentleman on the end of the phone.
    Chinese whisperers,

The gentleman Sally did speak to did say if she could get hold of one there a great grinder.

Well long story short ,I don’t know if I have the last grinder on the shelf in the whole of OZ ,but there is one coming my way ,expected delivery early next week from Queensland.
I’m currently sitting on the front porch waiting, and it’s cold in Melbourne,
I think I should in future when speaking to Chris Parks move my booty.

Cheers Matt (lucky I’ve got a good boss lady)

    Interesting information there Matt.

As there is a 10% rejection rate, Vicmarc could address the situation by upping the price by 10% to allow for the failure rate. Then the price would go from $319.00 to $350.90. Which I agree is an issue, but if doing that, meant that their grinders could stay in the market....well why not?

    Mick,
I agree ,and I would pay $350,but ,would the market sustain them at $350, that I don’t have the answer for, but $350 is getting up there in the hobby area for grinders.(yes Tormarc are more I think)
Especially when the big sheds have them, some times for under a hundred.
Granted the ones under a hundred a more suitable as boat hangers for a tinny but.
Not everyone is as savoy as you or the boss lady [emoji41].

I also find it ironic I be paying more for two CBN wheels than the grinder. But cry once and forget the pain [emoji849].

    Cheers Matt,

Finally! The back story to this is Matt gave me a chisel to sharpen, the blade looked like it had been deliberately hammered into nails and resembled a glue spreader and I gave it back to him about two minutes later hollow ground and ready to be honed. He immediately disappeared but was unsuccessful in his mission to convince Sally to buy him one.

Carbatec dropped these as well so maybe they had the same issue. A 3 phase grinder that can be converted to 240V 3 phase is the answer and run it from a VFD. That is most probably a slightly more expensive way but if needs must then it will work.

I had to replace the bearings in mine after a couple of uses. It was out of warranty by then but like I say I had only used it a couple of times.

Mine has been faultless over some years so I guess I was lucky. It is a tool that gets used only occasionally so it should have a long life.

Recommended CBN wheel speed for an 8" wheel is between 1450 and 2800 rpm so there's no need to use a slower speed as far as sheer removal of material is concerned.
Maybe this is why they are no longer being made?

If anything a higher speed is faster and less wearing on the wheel itself, although they remove material so fast even at slower speeds there's probably no difference. A slower speed grinder is likely to be smoother but a variable speed grinder is even better in that regard. Any residual vibe can usually be escaped by changing to a slightly different speed.

I use a single VFD to run my twin GMF 1HP grinders and rarely operate these below 35Hz (2000 rpm) up to ~3600 rpm but the main use for the variable speed is to find a low vibe spot.
E is a 6" diamond wheel and it turns out that optimum speeds for a 6 " wheel are the same as for an 8" CBN wheel but because the diamond wheel is on the side like that it has to be run a bit faster to achieve optimum speeds closer to the centre of the wheel.
