Default Watch out for the UV.

I finaly got the new MIG up and running and it is a wonderfull thing......but hey chaps ya have to be carefull about getting UV burned.

I have never had a UV burn and I have done some long sessions of stick welding.

About 5 minutes and I have a real nice RED patch on my ankle where my trousers rode up and my socks didn't cover. My other leg had a much less red stripe from the same cause, and the back of my left hand is a but pinky too.

AND at the time I was unaware of what was going on...only a mildly uncomfortable warm feeling.

I can see how one could do considerable skin damage and get very serious burns.

My mate george who does quite a bit of high current TIG, recons that he has been mildly sunburned thru a worn cotton drill shirt.
A redend chest with white patches where the pockets were.

So anybody new to mig or tig should be aware that these two technologies emmit quite a lot of UV and you can easily get burned if you don't cover up, and in a very short time.

    cheers

Yeah its easy to get burned with the UV Rays. my welding jacket has a thick cotton chest and leather arms and the cotton has lost all its color was purple now sorta white color.

    hi all,
    Ok!
A couple of points to be made about UV emissions from a welding arc.

A ranking order of severity of emissions, for example for 10 mins of exposure, you could be burnt a little from stick, even more from Mig and and yet even more again from Tig.

    1. Stick.
    2. Mig
    3. Tig

As amperage increases in each of the the processes so does the amount of emissions.

I seem to remember in my studies it was due to the cross sectional area of the electrode multiplied by the amperage running on the electrode.

For its given cross sectional area tig by its nature of small diam electrodes gives off far higher emissions than
    stick in comparison.
Another spin on that is what you are welding on steel ,ali or stainless and the reflectivity othe particular metal

It won't make a lot of of sense until you get forget to cover up during welding.I still get caught now and again.
Its then quick little jobs that get ya.

The basic rule is cover up and if you are mig welding make sure you dont tuck your pants into your boots. A few years ago i saw this happen and a large piece of molten metal ran down this guys pants and straight into his boot. He suffered a nice big hole in his foot and was off work for 2 weeks and not to mention the pain.

Y damn right it can happen pretty damn fast.

as far as tucking things in...... My big brother ( the professional metal worker in the family), wont weld with anything tucked in......I think he got a hot clinker down his shirt early in his apprenticeship and it got mixed up in his wedding tackle....so he has untucked his shirt ever since before welding.

Remember It is my theory that rap dancing was invented by a welder that got a clinker some where is shouldn't.

One thing that is definitely a NO NO.... is mig welding in shorts with no undies....... fortunitely I learned this from someone elses mistake.

    cheers
