Argosheild light verse Argon
Please help, but be gentle
I have been using Argosheild light with my mig for 15 years or so welding steel only.
I have just purchased an AC/DC tig to do some aluminium work as a hobby at home and know I have to use Argon.
It has been 28 years since I have done any tig welding and was just wondering if you can get away with using Argon for both before I go out and rent another bottle ?
Regards, Bruce

From what I understand you can use Argon gas for both mig and tig weilding of a number of different metals the thing is usually the cost of the gases. Agosheild is a mix of carbon-dioxide and Argon hence the Grey band at the top of the blue-green bottle. you can use carbon-dioxide in the mig for steel fab., but the wield is not that clean of spatter. I would go for the Argon for both wielders to save bottle rent and have cleaner welds on steel fab., Argon will work for Aluminum, Stainless and mild.

Thanks for the reply,
It was late last night when I was searching the forum and couldn't find much info.
I have found some posts this morning dated back to 06/07, I think the only option for me is to try a bottle of Argon on my mig and see wether I like the outcome.

Argonshield is not completely inert like Argon.
My understanding of Mig/Mag welding is that when welding steel, the CO2 reacts and creates heat in the weld. Argon does not as it is inert.
I don't think you can do both and get a good job.
Mind you I am not an expert, just another hobbyist welder.

Argon is a pure inert shielding gas.Full stop
Argoshield is a mixture of gases
depending on the grade you have it can have:
Oxygen and Co2 and of course Argon
The colour coding on the cylinder will indicate
Black for oxygen and Grey for Co2 and Peacock blue for Argon
Different percentages and mixtures of these gases will alter the depth of penetration and shape of the bead.
There are some special mixes for tig but they are more $ than most of us want to afford.
The only time Argon gets a guernsey with mig is when you weld aluminium and I believe there specialist mixes for that too to make the arc a bit hotter on heavy stuff.
Sorry but argon on steel ( with mig ) will be unsuitable big time.

Thanks for all the replies,
I guess another $70.00 per fill and $13.60 per month rent won't break me for Argosheild as well.
I'll just have to cut my wife's magazine and chocolate allowance again (somethings got to give)
