Thread: Starting a cut

All you need to do is pause a little longer on the start. I needs to get a bit hotter than acetylene. The other thing that you can do is slightly overdo the oxy in the preheat flame, that will speed up the heating process. After the initial heat all the processes are the same.

Hi Mat,
Sometimes it helps to concentrate on the corner of thick metal, but you have to wait untill the local spot you're heating actually melts before pressing the handle (secondary gas). To my eyes it seems like the centre of the yellow area turns clear, like water, that is the signal its ready to go. A well adjusted flame will make that happen quicker, sharp points on the flames. If its furry looking, something is wrong either with your setup, or the nozzle.

LPG burns a little cooler than Acetylene so it will take longer to raise the metal to about 815 degrees C (Ignition temperature) a sharp edge, centre pop mank, cold chisel mark, will help with both fuel gasses, once the cut has started the oxidation generates it's own heat.
