ALL,

The presence of the excavator bucket sitting on the pipe was not even a small clue to this bloke. He can't have been very experienced because many of the pipelines have residual stress in them.
We knew enough to make the release cut at the side where there was a place to avoid /run away from the pipe spring back.
The maneuver with the lighted torch prior to the pipe spring back did not impress , as well.
