    Default Oxy/lpg hose life

I use oxy/lpg infrequently, maybe half an hour every month or two. I take care of my hoses, I usually disconnect them between uses, coil them loosely and lay them flat, indoors out of the sun. My current set (Weldsmart) is maybe 3 years old and has cracks every 4 or 5mm along the length of both hoses, they are not leaking (yet) but I don't want to use them again.

Why is this? I have el cheapo garden hose that has lived in the Queensland sun for years without springing a leak or cracking.

What is the best strategy here? Buy the cheapest you can and replace them every 2 years? How can I be sure that if I pay more for a 'brand' hose that it isn't a tarted up version of the cheap hose. Any recommendations?

    Hi Bob,
my hoses are about 14 years old. All I have done is trim the ends where they connect to the blow pipe.
Maybe the difference is that they are tightly rolled up in a retracta-reel

Hi Bob, when you put your hoses away, are they in a cupboard/box or hanging on a hook or similar. Even out of direct sunlight, they will perish, if it's not possible to put them in a cupboard or a box, try putting it in an old wheat sack, tape the ends closed first to keep out the nasties and dust.
Nice trailer Phil. When I get mine cleaned up, I'll submit mine.

I've always assumed that the outer layer is a wear-protective layer - it's there just to stop the actual pressure layer taking scuff or UV damage and providing a bit of minimum bend radius enforcement.

I have a similar problem with my oxy set. Our local plumber suggests to go to tradelink/reece/swan etc and get new ones made up - problem solved.

I am not sure of the cost, but since they deal in the trade, I would assume that it is not that expensive.

Being a plumber in construction/hvac industy im on the oxy all day every day, except for the few jobs done in steel/stainless. My set of hoses are nice. Its a boc brand that came in a kit and the only problem we have is them spliting over time at the torch peice, no big deal just cut and rejoin. We all leave the gauges on and the hoses rolled up around the trolly. I havnt seen a hose set like you have described yet.
I got given my set brand new 2 years ago when i started at the company.

Thanks for the comments guys. My impression re oxy hoses was that they last more or less indefinitely, but you do need to rework the ends from time to time because of the stresses imposed at those points. That's certainly not the case with my current set.

Maybe my supplier got caught with a dud batch. I emailed them a few days ago with this query but no response yet.
