portable generator
Hi all new to this and was just wondering if anybody has had any experience with the Robocar Power TMD 6000 LXT available on ebay. Will only be used infrequently but wish to be able use a 140 amp stick welder when there is no power available . Would this unit be suitable, any replies appreciated

Hi
Years back I bought a 5.5 KVA Honda Generator with a 13HP motor to use with a 140amp buzz box CIG welder, had to weld up some bracket for the pistol club to attach lights to. The sales bloke in Karratha assured me that it would be fine to use with my welder. It was not, even using the smallest rods the Gen set struggled to maintain good arch on the rod. Tried everything, had it checked out by a leckie, shortened the leads to the job etc. Not big enough on the KVA rating, 7Kva would have been a lot better. Dont know about the new inverter welders and what they require in regards to KVA on a gen set.

Thanks for that Dingo very helpful, as I wish to weld up brackets etc at the cricket practise nets. Looks like 7KVA at a minimum but probably should go for a repuatable brand as the China made units do not appear to be rated the same. Thanks again

Splinter, with the price of the welder/gen sets, you could buy one that will weld and produce power without the headaches..
I have a small stick welder, and you need a fair bit of grunt to start it..
The only portable welder I ever enjoyed using was a Lincoln tractor pack, but you can't carry the tractor in a ute..

Splinter, I have an 8kva (6400kwatt) Dunlite unit (Honda 13hp and Italian MSN alternator) and I weld easily with it. 2.5mm rods mainly though sometimes 3.2mm. Very pleased with it. Picked it up from Trade Tools Direct a few years ago-around $2200. Still doing a lot of general work.
Cheers
Tony.
