Removing mill scale?
G,day all .I built a bridge to go over a gully out of new hot rolled I beams .About 2 tonn in weight , 9 meters long.Anyway I didnt know about mill scale and just sanded it and painted it .
So now all the paint is flacking off and rusting after only a few months . So anyone know the best way to get off the remaining mill scale still covered in paint?Blow torch? Needle scaler ? Tried an angle grinder but the paint soon blocks up the grinding wheels/flap discs etc .
Thanks fellers
P.S. if using new hot-rolled steel outside ,apparently ALL mill scale must be removed before painting --- otherwise dont even bother painting it will all just pop off

Gidday
Typically @ work after fabrication we would sandblast a job like this which not only gets rid of the mill scale and any other surface nasties but preps for paint (Our painter uses Jotun)..............We always sandblast mild steel before its painted unless its a simple touch up job or requires a GAL coating...................
Indeed the quickest way might be to Hire a sandblaster not only will you get rid of the mill scale n paint fast but you'll get the best results from your paint job.
If this isn't cost effective for you how we strip paint at work is with a 9inch Grinder and a Wire Brush cup wheel. PFERD abrasive products are the ducks guts & you can also get them double layered for more Bang!
