    Default Rush job

    Hi guys,

I had to do an emergency project this weekend .It involved welding up some stainless steel box section 25 x 25 x 2.4mm for a window awning frame to support horizontal Balu timber 92 x 19 spaced at 19mm.

It seems like my cherubs, or at least some of them, don’t love me all that much and for some months I have had my roof rocked at regular intervals. It escalated to a peak two weeks ago today and a 20mm fishing sinker was sling shotted through my bedroom window. It had to be one of the high powered jobbies as the sinker had a 10mm diameter flat on it. The flat was a glazed finish from high velocity impact with the window. Broken shards of glass were everywhere ,in our bed, our clothes and in the carpet.

The cops were good and sent car and the dog squad and the photographer the next day.Not much can be done until I can Id someone. By the time I get outside these gutless wonders are 100 meters away and hard to see let alone ID at night.

The glazier finally arrived during the week and replaced the pane. Rather than invite a repeat I had to go defensive and build an awning .Next up, when I save up for one, is a security camera.
A couple days work and $450 later I have a new window pane and the front of the house is clad stronger than Fort Knox.

As it was stainless (304) I have kept the welds to a minimum to avoid distortion .

I used 2.4mm 316L at 90 amps on AC hf
Pics below in wrong order but ou get the idea

    Good job Grahame,
Now lets see them get a sinker between those slats at a decent range .

Wondering if a movement sensor mounted ,and a 100 watt flood light on the house would be a deterrent.
Probably not ,some of these little vandalising b*stard* have more front than a Kmart store.

    Hi Woodlee

I have two of them set at short range.
The problem is that they attack from a dark walk way that runs of the end of the cul de sac where I live. Its commonly used by walkers at all hours.

The random nature of the attacks (-weeks apart) make it difficult for me to do a stake out, so to speak.

I have to wait until some one brags at school, the deputy principal reckons sooner or later some one won't be able to resist the urge to tell other kids about it.

It appears he gets a lot of of info on misdoings in that manner.

I am playing hands off with this one. When the little shitz are caught I will prosecute and seek damages.

I thought some one may be interested in the stainless steel. Its the first time I seen in in painted box section.

I enjoy tacking and welding with it.It wets beautifully -as you can see in the fillet picture- especially using the inverter.

I must admit I did think you had lost the plot talking about welding stainless when the photos showed blue paint. Makes you wonder why really? I would just confuse me having to make sure of what I grabbed from the steel racks!
Have a nice day - Cheers

Yes I queried it Rowan.I too was expecting just the raw s/steel colour.
They assured me it was correct.I note it friction cuts with a lighter more yellow spark.
I have 304 around the place as gate fittings ,hinges and bolts and it stands up to "rust city" conditions pretty well.

Public flogging is what's needed to curb these little B*star*s desire to vandalise other peoples property.
    (Just my opinion )

Used a lot of stainless in 316 and 304 in the mines where I worked never seen stainless stock painted ,looks like weld over primer normally seen on steel RHS .

You learn something new every day.
