Default Shades in Auto darkening helmet.

I was welding up an old sink for a motor cover recently and had the Tig set at 35 amps and had trouble seeing the arc with the helmet set on shade 9. The helmet is a Metalmaster Elite 9860 Digital from Tokentools and it has 3 ranges, Grind, Cut and Weld. (Sorry cant post a link from this tablet) Weld is from 13 to 9 then Cut is 8 to 5, so I set it to shade 8 and was able to see the weld pool to do the job. Following on from previous threads, is it OK to weld with reduced current on the Cut mode? I did not appear to suffer white spot or get gritty eyes.
    Thanks,
    Rgds,
    Crocy.

From previous discussions, the helmet protects you from the 'nasty' bits of radiation regardless of the shade (Provided you have safety glasses on - see other posts). All the shade selection is doing is making it comfortable for your eyes.

    Hi Crocy,

As Michael and others have stated the UV and IR protection is built into the cartridge so the level of tint of the LCD is adjusted to simply suit the operator's comfort level. There is no danger in using it out of mode and safety glasses are a must.

    Regards
    Pete (Tokentools)

DocBug, I am very happy with the helmet, love the cut mode for when I use the plasma cutter.

Thanks for that Michael, I went back and reread the other thread and it is clear to me now.

Hi Pete thanks for the reply as well. I don't suppose you are having a holiday in North Queensland any time soon, I still can't figure the new Alupulse 200 out, hoping Grahame is going to get his shed finished soon and then I will take it down to him to get some lessons.
    Thanks again guys,
    Rgds,
    Crocy.

Stuck on a computer on a Sunday night ...... I'd love a holiday in NQ, you offering?

Regarding settings, I assume it is AC that you are having troubles with and I would like to advise as follows. Use around 30 amps for each millimetre of material thickness. Make sure your tig torch is in the negative and job clamp is positive. Set your AC balance to 40% (about 10 O'Clock position) and AC frequency to 150Hz (about 12 O'Clock Position). Turn off all yellow knobs (pulse section), turn off blue knobs (up/down slope), turn off arc force(used for MMA welding). Stick your tungsten 2 x It's diameter past the ceramic nozzle. Set gas flow to 7 litres minimum and allow 1 litre per 15 amps after 70 amps.
Keep your tungsten 2-3mm off the job when welding and ensure you are welding with pure argon.

You can also reach me on 02 8014 1005 also if you need help.

    Regards
    Pete

Scuse my ignorance, but why are you wearing safety glasses for behind a helmet?

Sometimes you get hot metal bits bouncing up behind the helmet. It's just a second barrier that affords a little extra protection.

Would you believe the shed erectors just drove out the gate for the last time about half an hour ago.?

Now to get the sparky and PV installer sorted and we are good to go. I still have to put up some benches, though.

Good to hear. Can't wait to see if your PV arrangement from the other thread works and if your system interferes with any of your gear. I am going to give Pete's suggestions a go and let you know. The next race is the 20th of September, so chase your leckie up.
    Rgds,

Oh this is embarrising to admit in this forum, swapped the leads over and it welds real good now. Still can't work out why as on AC you don't have polarity, could understand if I was using DC.
Thanks again Pete, the phone call was cheaper than flying you up here,

Some do. Mine does. It's got fixed terminals for electrode and ground, but you can switch start polarity of the electrode terminal in the advanced menu options. Changes cleaning action at the start or something? I'm not sure but vaguely remember reading some internet discussion of why anyone would do this.
