I just put a bid on it, first and only bid, auction ends in 17 hours so i'll see if I won when I get up tomorrow afternoon after work.

As you said its not suitable for tig, but thats fine at the moment as I only have arc )

I'm glad you bought it Matt. You won't be disappointed. These are Swedish (I think) and are considered among the very best in the world. I owned one, and used it for a few years, and you don't have to change batteries or do anything to them; they recharge via the welding radiation. Just press a button, use it, and then let it turn itself off. Foolproof.

When I got into TIG welding I bought a $300 helmet that was meant to be really good, and sold my Speedglas to a neighbour. I missed it so much that I went and bought another one.

Speedglas would have to be one of the most common auto darkening helmets that I see in all the fabrication and welding shops.

Sorta like holden and ford, the things are every where.

The seller isnt making this purchase look promising, they said they wanted COD or DD, so I sent a message saying COD is good, send it to my address (which I gave), I get a message asking, "what is COD" hmmmmmmmmmmmm, if he stuffs me around to much i'll go buy a brand new one somewhere else now that i've got a taste for an auto darkening helmet.

Sorry to drag this up, was researching the auto helmets and came across this thread.

Was this the speedglas superlight (SL) helmet? Ebay link is too old to take a look.

Did you eventually buy the helmet - you said that the seller was messing you about a bit? If you did, what do you think to it?

I'm looking at the Miller Digital Elite or Miller Performance, buying from USA.

I got my speedglas 9100xx welding helmet off ebay from the states Wisconsin i think. was half the price of local store. were happy with it. there made in Sweden by 3M.

I dont know what it is as I didnt end up getting it, the seller and I couldnt agree on terms, he said COD was ok, so I asked for COD and he said no COD.

I got mine from a mate when he closed down his second hand shop as an unredeemed pledge I think they call them/.

I have tried a number of helmets and find this one superior in terms of adjustable shade density,
light weight and ability to fit a dioptre lens to it.
As it is so light, I don't have problems from long time consuming welds in awkward positions.

Its and older model and takes a tiny dry cell battery which last ages.Its at school at the moment so i'll look up the model no later.

As with the other Speedglas mentioned, it must be turned on and turns off automatically.

The others helmets I have tried, the Miller lite .the top model including Cigweld purchased by work have been top heavy and caused me a virtual pain in the neck.

you are on the right track with the speedglas helmets. I have had a 9002x with the adflo for a while now and am very happy.

Just be careful when buying any welding gear direct from overseas as in most cases the warranty is not valid here. Its just worth noting in case you need a warranty repair you will have to pay it yourself.

You won't go wrong with the Speedglas. I bought a 9002V several years ago and it still works great. There are perhaps two drawbacks - 1) Perhaps common to all auto helmets, if the sensors are obstructed then you might flash yourself 2) specific to the Speedglas (at least my model) the screws that hold the helmet to the head harness are only made of plastic and strip easily. This last problem was solved by machining up some new s/steel bosses for the inside of the helmet which I pressed in a M6 s/steel socket cap bolt for an interference fit, and turned up a few s/steel knurled nuts for the outside.

Despite this, under normal use the Speedglas is a very robust and fast auto-darkening helmet that is well worth the money, and a far better option than some of the cheap crap out there.
