UniMig Welders
Hi all, just after any opinions on the UniMig range of welders.
Looking at one of the 255 or 270 compacts. The unit will be used for both mild steel and aluminium welding.
Have looked at getting the separate wire feeder but not sure if I can justify the money, any thoughts?
Leaning towards these as they seem to offer a fair amount of features and grunt for the price.
Cheers.

I have a Unimig 240 myself. Had it for a few months. Only prob mine has given so far is a terminal came off a contactor inside the box. Fortunately the place I bought it from is also a warranty repair joint, so the turn around was literally the next day, Otherwise has performed well, especially for a cheap unit.
Havent tried using the reg on it as yet, just been running gasless wire. If I start using it more often will commit to cylinder rental.
The supplied Binzal torch has been fine. Obviously parts are readily available for this, including stuff like the switch. Even saw a liner for one at Waughs Industrial. Replacement cost for entire torch is around $130. Like the fact it simply screws onto the front. Have a total failure, simply screw on another & keep welding.
Have welded 8mm plate with no probs. Zero degree morning when I did it so I cheated by heating plate a bit using with heat gun first. Have no doubts unit could get the amps in fast enuf, but when its somewhere obvious like the plate that mounts a tow hitch, then I didnt want it to look like a dogs breakfast.
Mine has 8 amp settings & a basic menu system for feed rate, burn back time etc.. , fiddled around with those until it worked the way I wanted it. Dont really know what half the ???? means, but I recon the results look ok, especally since I'm running gasless.
Hope this helps

Unimig 250 SWF Welder
HI I own a Unimig 250 SWF Welder and have owned since new - October 2003. It has got 14 Voltage settings, Amp Range is 30 -250 amps, Volt range is 15 volt - 26.5 volt, 2t & 4t Functions, Spot Weld Timer, 30% percent duty cycle at 250 amps 26.5 volts, 60% at 175 amps 22.5 volts, 100% at 135 amps 20.5 volts, It will run 0.6 - 1.0 mm Ferrous wire, 0.8 - 1.0 mm Stainless wire, 0.8 - 1.2 mm Aluminium wire,0.8 - 1.2 mm Flux Core wire.
I have used 0.9 mm Aluminium Wire, 0.6 and 0.9 mm Ferrous Wire, 0.9 mm and 1.2 mm Flux Cored Wire. All Wires used worked fine 0.6 mm could have been better though. Probably because I use a really hot Gas which is 'Argoshield Universal' I suspect a colder gas would make the Wire perform a lot better.
The 0.9 mm Flux Cored Wire is great on Duragal and Galvanised Material. The 1.2 mm Flux Core Wire I 've used on 8 - 12 mm Steel with no Problems. I have only in the Time I've owned the Welder put through one roll of 0.9 mm Flux Core wire - 5kg, One Roll of 0.9 mm Ferrous Wire - 15kg.
I have had no Problems with My Welder except that recently I found that the Brass Tube just after the wire feed rolls had slipped back against the feed rolls. Only caused minimal damage to brass feed tube. I have run the Welder on a 20 mt 15amp extension Lead no problem. Although I don't reccomend winding the Welder right up on that size Lead. I got mine for $2250.00 ,but I paid cash on the spot. They have got heaps of grunt and consumables are cheap ie half price of Cig Consumables. A Guy across the Road from me has got a 240 Unimig and I know early in the Peace He had the Circuit board replaced under warranty. I hope this Helps.
