Thread: New welder REALLY just want a chance!

I can't give you a job unfortunately, but if you have good attitude towards your work, there are opportunities out there but without experience it just takes a bit more effort to get a leg in the door. If you make it your job to get a job in that you spend in a day as much time at work to look for work I am sure it will happen for you.
My best advice is to research areas where the types of businesses you are interested in operate and then get on foot and literally knock on doors. Take some basic info about yourself to hand out if anyone even half interested. Make a note of anyone's details who may be considering someone down the track to follow up later.

Cheers for the advice john, really do appreciate any and all help and advice. I am looking and searching all day, and not giving up hope. Going to start sending out some prospective emails to some companies and hopefully make a plan to get out and about and, as you said, literally knock on some doors.

Hi Greg I understand your situation; have you got yourself registered with any of the labour hire agencies. For people with your skill set this is often the best way to being able to get full time work.
When you do register with labour hire agencies don't just register with one register with at least 3 or 4 in spite of what they say. Once you have registered ring them every day to see if they have any work for you. They will probably ask you not to ring every day and that they will contact you when they do have work for you. I know this method of ringing them every day works as I did this when I went back into the workforce after being a house husband for three years.
When they told me not to ring them every day I asked them are you going to pay my bills; their reply was no. So I then replied " when you find work for me then I'll stop ringing you".
At first they didn't like this and after 3 months I was working every week day and the occasional weekend. I also found that the agencies would invariably book me in advance; which meant that I was employed by 3 sometimes 4 different companies. As time progressed I was eventually employed full time by the company with the best rates and working conditions.

I have one question.
Why, if you have a BA in Business Administration, do you want to go into the Boilermaking/Welding fields?
I would be the last person to belittle the trade, I am a Boily myself, but there are much easier, better paying jobs out there. Of course, the mine site/ pipelining jobs pay very well, but are seriously limited.
Boilermaking will take a toll on your body, (no where near as bad as it used to be, but still relevant) and the stresses and demands placed upon Boilys is ever increasing.
I love my trade and am good at it, but would not recommend it to my Son, if that makes sense.
If you are still keen, then you will need to get an adult apprenticeship and go from there. Do not go down the road of becoming an Unindentured Tradesperson as you will effectively be doing the same job for less pay.

I would not put BA in Business Administration in your resume if you are after a welding job - keep the resume relevent. Good luck
