    Post First Welding Project....

    Hi everyone,

Im hoping to get some advice or pointers on this project i have been asked to make.
My Sister in law owns a pizza shop and needs a waiting bench. She wants me to build a frame where she can put cushions seats and back rest, using some wood and material. I said I would give it a crack and do it for free if she paid for the materials. Mind you this needs to be done on the cheap. Got a quote for stainless, forget about it.

I will be purchasing some SHS 16mm (6.5m lenghts@ $13) the large bench seat needs to be 2.8meters long, 420mm from floor to bum, 780mm from floor to top of back rest, and 425mm for front to back.
First question, is this the best choice in materials?
I am supplying a crude drawing on the proposed project. I didnt draw the little brackets that i would weld on, to attach a pieces of wood later on.

So what I will be doing:

Cutting up the lenghts I need using a grinder and trying to get my angles correct. Using a combinations square to get my 45 degree angles.
i dont know yet at what lenghts to add the bracing noggins on the seat and back rest, was going to go by ass lenght (my ass).
So once i cut i all square (which will be harder than it sounds).

What would be the best way to cut it, would I tack up the rectangular seating part first, then add the legs. The back legs will be one piece that turns into the back rest.
To me it doesnt feel as if it will be strong enough if i just weld it that way.
Do i need to add re-inforcement of some sort on the load bearing joints?

Once i tack it up and it is all square I plan to Tig it all up. I understand that i cant just go crazy at this stage and weld anywhere. I have to Weld one spot and move to another spot to counter the bending. At the sametime making sure i dont loose my square. Last thing i want is to have a wobbly ass bench.

I will be bracing the back of the bench to a brick wall most likely using dyna bolts

This may seem very basic and simple project, but to me I need to get my head around the basics so I can learn how to tackle a project like this for next time.

Appreciate some helpfull advice, if you dont understand my ramblings please ask me to simplyfy. I have a tendency to confuse even my self.

One last question, is this design normal or is there a standard in making benches like this?

Thanks guys, always appreciate your advice.

    Regards,
    Paulo

Paulo, With most of the jobs that I am unsure about making, either in timber or steel, I go and search for ideas, sizes and material that existing jobs are made from, copying good existing jobs is the way to go, so always keep your eyes out and a small tape measure handy.

As for material sizes this will depend on what the frame structure is covered with and how it adds strength to the completed structure, also you are using your brick wall as a structural part of the seat.

I would build a rectangular frame for the seat base and back rest, welding the 2 together, there would be 3 long sections (base of backrest and rear of seat share a section) and 4 sections for the sides, then add stiffners as required.
