Default Welding thick to thin section RHS

    Me again
OK I am on a roll.I was prompted to think when seeing the post on a thick section welded to a 1.6mm thick RHS section.

I suppose technique is so ingrained in my welding ,I do it with out thought. So I thought about it and:

    Problem

To weld a thick section like 6mm plate to a 1.6mm box and avoid burn through s or a slag hole.

    Given that the

    • Electrode size
    • Amps setting
    • Arc length

are all correct, a bit of a different technique is called for.
By keeping most of the arc force on the heavy bit,the welder can wash a bit of the arc towards the thin side with out burning the beejesus out of the thin wall. The electrode is angled over to push the heat into the heavy side.

As I made the graphic first so this following bit is not in it.
Attach the thick section a bit down the side so there a bit of exposed vertical side to wash into rather the the rolled edge on the box corner which can be a slag trap.

    Sound ok then?
    Cheers
    Grahame
