    Default welding tip

Hi. this may seem like a stupid question but when welding aluminium should you weld away from yourself or towards yourself. In other words should you push the hand peice into the new weld as you go or sort of drag it away? Thanks for you advise in advance.

I presume that you are Mig welding the aluminium.
With Mig you push the handpiece in the direction that you are going to weld

This is always a point of contention, push, pull, drag etc, angle of hand piece, blah blah blah..... If you look at a dedicated machine set up for process welding you will most likely find that the welding handpiece is set up at 90 deg's or sometimes even set up to an optimium angle. At the end of the day the angle of attack will be goverened by what you are welding and how you can get to it, but what is more a consideration is actually seeing your weld puddle rather than worrying about where you have the handpiece, so that you can SEE that you are making a good weld.

    Default Push or Pull

Another theory advanced in the text was to push the GMAW torch because of the ( unseen ) swirl in the gas cover creating a vortex that dragged in atmospheric air and resulted in porosity faults.

Having spent a few years dragging a GMAW torch placing vertical down root runs in high pressure radigraphed pipework,I suspect that statement is a load of crap. Where the proplems arise with gas cover vortex and contamination are from uneven spatter build up around the torch gas shroud (nozzle) opening. Problems always occurred if I got lazy and failed to clean and check the gun and the nozzle before starting a run or from failing gas o rings or seals.

Flux core is where the gun is only dragged.I believe the reason for that is so not to weld over the flux and risk a porosity.
