Antique 11TPI tenon saw, need files to sharpen
G'day all
Over XMAS in Hobart, I picked up a straight 11 TPI tenon saw.
It's certainly serviceable & I intend to use it, but I need a file to sharpen it.
Any ideas where I buy suitable files? I don't even know what size to use, or if the Aus Wiltshire file I have is suitable (1/4" sides).
I'd rather learn how to sharpen & use a serviceable saw, than buy another saw waiting for it to go blunt.
Thanks

A great second place to start after here.
Would be
Blackburn tools in the U.K.
great on line resource and they sell fillies.
But getting hold of good files is becoming harder.
But if you could post some pics would also help.
11 TPI would need and extra taper slim file.
But I would have a good read at Blackburn tools website first.
Cheers Matt

Basically, you want to pick a file which is large enough so that the teeth of the saw come to just shy of half way up the two sides of the file. If the teeth come past the half way point, then they wear the file so that when you ultimately change corners, the sharpening surfaces of the other two corners have already been worn.
Likewise, if you just pick a file which is way too large, then the gullets between teeth will be too rounded and not deep enough, and it won't clear its shavings properly. It can also mess up the toothing if it's way too big.
Henry Eckert was about the best source I was aware of in Aus for a single file. I think they had a suggested sizing chart on their site for them too, but don't quote me on that. Simplicity is likely correct about the extra slim taper. That sounds correct to me as well. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the file on their site anymore. Possibly discontinued :/.
Here is the file sizing chart on Wenzloff's website. I've used that before with success.
Hope that helps.
Good luck,
Luke

Antique 11TPI tenon saw, need files to sharpen
Thanks Matt & Luke
The FILE I have is stamped 'Extra Slim', but it is 1/6" wide and the teeth on the saw are ~1/16" (~1.5mm) deep, so the file I have is probably too big.
I'll check our your suggestions.
Thanks
