Antique Wertheim hand plane
Hi,
Can anyone help me with this recently acquired wooden plane - the makers mark on the plane iron appears to have the word "Wertheim" but I cannot maqke out any of the other markings. The plane is 8 inches long (200mm) and the blade 1.5 inches wide (38mm). It has an adjusting screw for the blade/cap iron that I've not seen before. Also picked up a "Bohler" wooden plane which I will leave for another day.

Would appreciate any assistance with identification.

Very interesting adjuster on the cap-iron!
Will be interesting to see if any other of the same type exist or if this is an ingenious and well executed workshop one-off.

The horn suggests that the plane is possibly of German (or more generally European) origin which would help explain the lack of information.

Looks like Franz Werthheim was a plane maker in Germany in the 1800s.

Thats about all I can tell but a place to start looking.
The blade adjustment is quite clever.

Interesting fellow. Biography of the founder - Wertheim Going by dates, the plane in question was made by one of his tool factories in Krems, rather than one of his personal pieces. But still.
Not that I know anything about this. Sheerly for curiosities' sake I took a ride on the google slide for 1/2 hour. ;D

Hi Ian,
I did find some Wertheim tools on internet and it would appear that it could be Austrian.

I think you will find that the distinctive front horn on your plane is typically attributed to representing a "German" plane.
I've seen similar planes in the German speaking portion of Switzerland, and in this context, Austria and Germany are the same.
(What we know as Germany only came into existence in 1871. Prior to then "Germany" was a German speaking trading federation in central Europe.)regards from Alberta, Canada

I have a plane with a similar blade adjustment. I don't know the name of the planemaker, but the blade is French, a Goldenberg "eye" (so, made near the France/Germany border)

Gatehouse,
I'm not a plane (or any other type) of expert but thought this might be of interest.
The photo is from c. 1980 and the planes are described as German (no manufacturer given) but it shows the screw operated, spring loaded blade adjuster still being used.
Cheers,
