Thread: Berg Chisels

Berg is a well known and respected brand (of old). Good score, at $10 bucks each.

Good score indeed. You could probably recoup your money by selling just the 1/8", they're quite hard to find and I've seen them fetch high prices on eBay.

All of the Bergs I have* have a logo on them (except one which has clearly been ground off by someone's particularly clumsy five year old), even the one gouge, although that has a tiny shark followed by SWEDEN.


* That makes it sounds as if I have more (and know more) than I really do. I have a lovely set of bevel edged sockets in a Berg canvas tool roll, and a few loose red plastic handled ones I've picked up along the way.

I just had my brother take a look at a couple of gouges he got as an apprentice and they were his from new and they have no Berg logos or markings. I have a lot of Bergs and the only ones I have without the Berg marks are the 3/16" and 1/8" Tang chisels. I am confident that they are Bergs, they are near new and look to be untouched.That is a great buy for $90..
The price being asked for them on eBay at present is over the top and half are franken chisels with Berg handles (often the wrong size) and with blades that are Eskilstunas blades, but by other makers. That sellers try to pass off as Bergs by not saying they are bergs but including the word berg in the heading and nice clear pics of the blue oval on the handle. I recall one seller who used to take fuzzy pics intentionally. A friend bought one of his chisels it was a toledo brand blade but the worst part was the missing parts of the logo was made mostly from blue texta pen.. When quizzed about it he claimed it was as found.
