Boker saw sharpening vise

I picked up a pair of saw sharpening vises for a few bucks yesteday - a funky ball and socket Disston No. 1 and a neat more recent Boker saw vise.

The Disston is self-explanatory and will work and look much better after a clean up and de-rust but the Boker is interesting because the design is so damn simple that I think it will become my new workshop saw vise.

The versatility of the Disston is impressive but its screw-on mounting and b&s design is not so sturdy ultimately.

The Boker jaws are 12" (so wider than the Disston by an inch or two) and it has four screw holes for simple but sturdy bench or board mounting.

A simple cam lever and steel spring applies even pressure quickly and powerfully. The Disston (through wear) is much more sloppy to clamp up a saw.

The jaws also have a small groove accomodating a leather or rubber dampening strip.

It looks like a very simple design variant of the Wentworth saw vise to me.

Based on the paper label and the blue-green paintjob I'm guessing it's 70s or even 80s vintage? The backside has a tough-to-read casting stamp 'Die___ A890'. A890 is the steel???

Any thoughts on its age, country of origin, usefulness, etc.?

Looks a lot like a GN Stearns one. I have one which is a copy of the Stearns, and while mine is smaller than yours, it uses the same mechanism as far as I can see.

Your GN Stearns copy vise certainly looks like it shares the same inspiration as my Boker.

Boker are a German company from memory.
Straight edges come to mind.
I think FH Prager were their Sydney/Australian agents.

Yes they are. More into knives these days by the look of it.

I have a pair of Boker Pliers that I purchased in the early 80s, probably from BBC Hardware.
