Default I bought this old chisel at a garage sale for $2

I don't know much about chisels but I know enough to guess that this is an old framing chisel:

I also know that Mathieson and Son were tool makers in Glasgow. This chisel seems in pretty good nick for its age.

Do these things have any value?

It seems like it may be a tanged chisel.
And for $2 bucks I would say that's a score.
I would sharpen that up and see our it olds an edge.
Being from Glasgow with its steel industry history I would hesitant a guess it would be a goody.
But I don't really know my chisels.

    Cheers Matt

I have three of these which I bought for $10-$15 each.

One is just like yours, including the same stumpy handle, which I thought was a user mod till I saw yours.

They are interesting, but it’s hard to find a use for them which I guess governs price.

This is not a user mod... This is a socketed Firmer see Mathieson Catalogue. You can get a copy of the Catalogue from Hans Brunner
    Old Mathieson Tools
A pretty handy document to have.

Still being made in 1933 and probably later. I thought they were much earlier then that.

That catalogue is interesting because you can see that a lot of the stuff being sold as 19c in antique shops etc was still very much in manufacture in 1933.

I missed this thread somehow but better late than never. Two bucks very well spent. Mathieson had a reputation for very good tools. I have a few Mathieson planes that are great workers but so far only one bevel edged chisel by them. It holds a good edge
