    Interesting.

The first one, having both pulley and flywheel, looks to me to be a user modification. The second looks to have lost it's "loose" pulley, with just the "fast" pulley remaining. It has the "A" coupler as well. But what's with the chuck?

    Cheers, Vann.

Nice spot on the coupler. I hadn't noticed that!! The coupler has the "A" and is less the boss to the side just like mine! The main body does however have the angled lug for the pawl adjuster bolt.

There is also this one on ebay, with ok original paint.

[QUOTE=DSEL74;1703646]The rusty one has been on ebay for a while and is way over priced in my opinion (as is it's friend). I notice that the actuator arm is there but removed.

    Hi,
When you're belt driving the drill you would disengage the actuator, imagine the disaster you'd have if you moved the belt over to the driven pulley without noticing the advance pawl engaged. So the best way to avoid that would be to remove it all together. Happily the owner has removed it and managed not to lose it.

    Geoff.

That just gave me a moment. I was wondering why the shaft on some actuator arm was so long. It is so you can slide the actuator out of action so it can't engage.

Default DawnPost Drill - Dating Versions

What a great thread we had. I enjoyed my revisit reading it all from the start again.

    Although the family has grown

These are the dawns plus two ring in buffalo 611's which I'm still a firm believer that dawn copied.

I know champion started producing drill presses by 1889. This was functionally the same as the dawn 611 but had a seperate pillar from the main body.

I'd like to know who by and when the first post drill was produced?

I'm also curious to find out more on the relationship between The Globe, Tough, and Dawn. I've been informed the Dawn produced The Globe but now can't find any records of it. I also always thought The Globe products were green but spoke to two people today that have them and both swear they are in original red paint same color as Dawn.

They're not the same, but share a lot of similarities, so I think you're right - Dawn most likely modeled theirs on the Buffalo Forge drills. They even used the same model numbers.

I can't answer any of your other questions with any authority - just speculation (so I'll shut up ).

However, looking at your Silver post drills...

    aSilvers.jpg

...from bottom to a Silver No.1; and No.1 1/2; a No.22; and a No.21? The 3-spoke flywheel on the first one looks too big for a No.1, but maybe that's just because it's closer to the camera (and I know you have a No.1 - but I don't recall that you had a No.21)?

You are correct on my Silver model numbers. The No.1 has the early three spoke flywheel which later changed to a 5 spoke. It is the original one for that drill.

Gotta say your pretty cluey to be able to pick it is a 21 from what is visible in that photo. The feed wheel is off and lying on the floor.

Wow Dale. Nice collection! Between you and Vann, you seem to have the cross-Tasman post drill market covered!
With those and some of the machinery you have collected, you must have a decent collection going.

Vann has a couple of more rare ones that I'd love to have.

In terms of drills there are two more post drills not shown in those photos, I have at least 7 other handcrank bench clamp on type drills mostly Millers Falls and Goodall & Pratt, then 6 Bench top flat belt drills, the giant Denbigh, and five or six flat belt grinders, disston bandsaw sawfiler an saw setter as well as a foley saw filer all flat belt drive. I am working on a stationary engine at present that can drive the line shaft.

I also have two power hacksaws that were originally line shaft driven that use regularly in the blacksmith shop. Hopefully 'll ge tit all together as a nice working display one day.

Known to us common folk as "Drillpression"? (a very bad play on "depression").

Actually I would have thought that Bi-polar (I'll have to work on a 'play' on that word), due to the high I get when I win one, and the low when I see how many parts are broken/bent/bastardised or missing .

I get Drillpression when I haven't gotten a new one for a while or miss out on one. I can also be affected when I see the arc of shame in the table.
