Your dealers
Of late, I seem to be wanting ,hunting more and more older tools.
I'm not sure if I would class my self as a collector or because I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with modern rubbish made from chocolate improved steel.
And value the quality of tools of old.
My normal deals are through local bric brac vintage bazaar shops.
Of which I know off a about dozen in Melbourne ( were I hang out during the week)and surrounding areas that cater to my personal particular taste.
Plus quite a few in my wondering the country side.
Ie cheap and unfortunately with a layer of grime and rust.
The other favourites are the swap meets which being in Victoria I feel spoilt for having both the Bendigo swap meet and the Ballarat swap meet, both massive days. 6 am starts miles of aisles must wear good shoes plenty of rusted treasures from $1 upwards.
Plus a few other smaller ones thrown in for good measure.
Next is everyone's favourite EBAY who doesn't have 30 plus items in their watching list immm.
Then there's gum tree of course.
Plus the local garage sales.
So if you don't mind sharing ,where do the other rust hunters look for that special piece.?
I know and understand I maybe asking for something more precious then a drop of dew from a sacred lotus flower.
I also appreciate some post may be thrown in to throw me of the scent.
But it is modern world ,full of love and kindness and sharing.
Cheers Matt

Matt,
Have a look at the Hand Tool Preservation Association website, it might interest you. They have regular tool sales days, the next one is the 12th November next. I believe they hold a night sale the day prior for members and the 12th is the unsold items available for the great unwashed.
One of our members, issatree, is a member and he can give you more details about this association, send him a pm.
Hope that helps with your addiction.
Peter.

This part of Texas has practically nothing in the way of interesting old tools. I've found a little at flea markets and private sales but the majority of my stuff comes from persistent monitoring of eBay.
Innovations are those useful things that, by dint of chance, manage to survive the stupidity and destructive tendencies inherent in human nature.

Yes, I'm with Rob on this one; Not that I visit his flea markets .
Occasionally I go to clearing sales, but that caters more for the farmer and is great if you are looking for a 300HP tractor. Not quite so productive for my interest. However, I alwayslook out for the large hay trailer loaded with all sorts of rusty treasures.
The only avenue I would really add to your list is garage sales. The problem there is similar to an expression a friend of mine had from many years ago. She used to say "You've got to kiss a lot of toads before you find prince charming."

Apart from the above, I've heard of people letterdropping a suburb with an old tools wanted notice to see what turns up. Could also put up something on the supermarket notice board etc.
Worth a try to see what's lurking around.

So either some of you are holding out on me.
Or it looks like I have a serious problem has I've exhausted all avenues.[emoji853][emoji853]
Immm seems eBay plus the tool groups I follow on Facebook now.

Camberwell market can have some goodies at reasonable price. Picked up few things there lately.
Heard that there is old tools to be found at Cheltenham Rotary Sunday market but not been there myself.
Would be keen know about your hunting grounds?

This may sound a bit cynical but the way to score old tools is simple.
Join a local men's shed or tool collectors club or similar.
Get yourself on the committee, own a ute or van.
Volunteer to be the equipment person in the case of a men's shed or donations officer in a collectors club.
I recently heard that a local Sydney recycling/reuse shed was no longer accepting donations as they had so much stuff they had no idea what to do with it.
I had frequently visited their resale shop over the past 10 years and never seen anything worth buying.
The local tool club often gets complete tool chests donated, they are always half empty on arrival.

I look in at the local Crime Converters sorry Cash Converters, they are over priced, but if it's been there a while, I put in an offer that I think is about right and I usually get it for that, or ask what's your rock bottom price???
