    Default C&H Dovetail Machine

I have an old C&H dovetail machine. I restored the bottom half as it was very rusty, then started using it and have not yet finished the top. It works well and everything moves freely.

The dovetail bit that came with it appears to have been sharpened many times and has very little life left.

To cut a correctly fitting dovetail, the dovetail is only 4.5mm deep. This is working OK with the drawers and boxes I have been making, however, it would be nice to get another, larger router bit, maybe one that cuts approx 10mm deep dovetails.

Does anyone have any idea where to source a bit, or do I need to have it custom made. The shaft is 3/8". I have been quoted approx $150 to $200 for a solid carbide one from timber tools in Bayswater, Vic.

If I do get one made, how do I figure out the dimensions so the spacing suits the machine?

    Many thanks,

    Andrew.

I would try Carbi-tool in Morrabbin, pretty sure they had them in stock.

Do you have a Manual for setting this machine up ?

    G'day Matty,

Thanks for the reply. I read some posts from a few years ago and was hoping you would comment.

I have noticed that Carb-I-Tool do a 3/8 shank bit. It that the one that suits my machine. Would be very easy if that was the case.

I would love a copy of the manual if you have it. I totally stripped the base of the machine. It took me a while to figure out how it works, and a little bit longer to set it up. I've done a few drawers and small boxes with it and it works well, however, there is room for a small improvement as it cuts the slot slightly deeper than required. This may be my mistake, as, I generally sit the front of the steel pin guides flush with the face of the board.

    Thanks,

    Andrew.
