The Globe - Australia - Old Post drill - Any info please??
Hi all,
I was directed here from a post I have in Instagram about an old Post drill I picked up at the weekend.
I am in Ireland, and I bought if from an Australian guy who emigrated to Ireland a few years ago (yes in that direction.. not sure why!!)
I saw a grainy pic online but when I picked it up from him (at just €15.00) was amazed that is was from Australian..
The only markings that are easily visible are "The Globe" & "Australia"
I have found little references online apart from some old ads on Gumtree with 1 or 2 for sale.
I would love to know any detail possible about the piece, dates etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Nick.
(Excuse the rotation of the images, they are correct on my PC - I guess its because i am in the northerner hemisphere )

According to the HTPAA, Globe post drills were made by Globe Products Ltd (Aust).
Hand Tool Preservation Association of Australia Inc. - Directory of Australian Makers
A search of newspaper archive Trove reveals ads for Globe Products based in Hindmarsh, South Australia. There are ads for post drill from 1950 to 1954 by distributors including McPhersons.
There were at least the following models 401, 402, 403, 405, 406.

There are others here with more post drill knowledge that may be able to add to this.
A search of the forum reveals others here with Globe post drills.
Someone with access to McPhersons catalogs may be able to check them for a wider date range.

Globe were a company, but the post drills were made/ manufactured by Dawn for Globe at Dawns foundry, and distributed as their own range in competition to Dawn.
I'm pretty sure there was only two model globe drills and they very closely matched the Dawn models (612 & 616 from memory) but were lighter in construction when sat side by side. Tough also made drills and had post drills done at the Dawn factory and were again a similar pattern to the globe.
I have some photos at home I can upload for comparison.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Dale, where's the proof that Tough had their post drills made by Dawn? I haven't heard that of Tough before and having their own foundry I find it pretty hard to believe.
Cheers
Geoff.

Geoff,
Where is your proof that they didn't?
Where is proof that Tough didn't out source any work?
Can you prove their foundry was operating at the same time as the post drills were in production?
Do you have proof the did make them in house in their foundry?
I personally have heard it many times that Dawn made them. I recently did the photography for an article on post drills with a number of collectors and this was discussed numerous times.
I have heard it many times before also.
Still it may be wrong and I'm happy for you to prove that. Since your so strong in your view.
I'm getting tired of how people attack others information without being able to support their own opinions with any data.
If you can I'll be happy to make sure the article has its data corrected before publication.

Dale,
Of course, I can't prove any of those things, nor do I feel I need to, you're the one making the statement.
Extensive research has been done, over many years, by members of HTPSWA on Tough including conversations with members of the Tough family and ex employees of the company. The overall picture is of a company that took pride in doing everything themselves in house. Apart from a small contribution about Tough braces I'm not involved in this research but have read, and trust, the information contained in it to date.
But all research is a work in progress and I'm sure that if there is some evidence that Dawn was involved in Tough post drill production it will be welcomed by those HTPSWA members.
I look forward to purchasing a copy of the article you are involved in when it becomes available.
Cheers,
Geoff.
