    Default Line shaft

I bought that mortiser the other week from Gumtree that was posted on here.
Gave us a chance to catch up with a mate in Bathurst on picking it up.
Also saw for the first time the big chair commemorating the pre federation meeting in Bathurst.
I made the pattern for this in my former life.
Is there anyone out there into line shaft gear as I intend to hook this up to the shaft picturedP1050126.JPGP1050128.JPGP1050130.JPGP1050129.JPG below.
This is currently run by a 3 phase motor but a mate has a 6hp Buzzacott stationary engine which should be a goer.(I have a 2hp but it needs work)

    Yep,

If anyone is near Ballaret Vic. I would highly recommend stoping into Sovereign Hill and having a look at the Cartwheel factory (thanks Matty for the recommendation). It's not just for display purposes either, they actually claim to make a fair trade from making cartwheels. They have a really extensive setup, I think I counted at least 8 Defiance machines, plus some others, all hooked up to run off line shaft drive, all setup throughout the workshop. I found it interesting to try and workout how each lever activated each machine.

Henry, I wish I could offer some advice, but unfortunately I don't think I could be much help. I am very interested though and look forward to seeing a post or two on the setup.

    Cheers,

    Camo

Apart from the solid look and feel to a lot of line shaft driven machinery that comes with the age of those machines I love the sound that they make when in use. A friends father who has long since passed away had a line shaft and big three phase motor in his home workshop with a pedestal drill and table saw running off it. The clackety-clack as the belts spun and the belt joiners touched the pulleys is a wonderful sound along with all the shafts and wheels rotating in unison is a great experience in my book. Sadly only seen and heard in working museums and workshops as mentioned these days.

There is the Roy Underhill episode at the Sash Window factory ... full of belted machinery.

and I'm pretty sure Jayeson had a write up about a place in Perth where he had gone regarding some machinery ... there were lots of pictures ... the website has gone sideways at least ... it used to be titaniumstudios/tooljunkie ...

I've found this much so far ...

    TJ's Tools and Projects

Oooh .. oooh ... ah ... it had all been converted ... The Ways of Old Woodworking Machines
