    Default Siddons/Sidchrome

It is very unusual for me to blab about anything other than Titan related subjects, however the recent sad passing of that great Australian, John Siddons got me thinking. I'm trying to find out who came up with the famous Sidchrome jingle "Canna handa man a grander spanner". Net info has the Ad agency involved (Monahan, somebody and Adams -Phillip?) but doesn't tell you how they got to it. Is there anyone out there who knows? Has any of our members ever worked there? My connection and interest was piqued by the fact that I went to Sunday school held at the West Heidelberg factory canteen sixty years ago (1955/56ish). John's Dad (Roysten Siddons) was the Superintendent. I also remember visiting the factory on a scout outing and being fascinated by the racks of spanners being dipped in the plating tanks.

It's a guess but are you talking about Phillip Adams (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillip_Adams)?

Phillip Adams is still with us and I imagine he would be quite approachable.

Yep. Contacted him and he came back. Before his time apparently but he was very friendly, so thanks for the tip Markharrison.

I can't help you, but I certainly remember the jingle. It was common even on this side of the Tasman. "it's a Sidchrome, that's the one the experts use" IIRC .

    Cheers, Vann.

They were the must have spanner/sockets when I was growing up. After I got married I wanted to have a set of spanners at my house and sidchrome were the ony ones look at. 33 years later and I still have them.

When I started my apprenticeship, the foreman got the tool guy round to kit me up. We mainly worked on Aussie and English vehicles. It was all SAE and Whitworth/BS. The spanner and sockets were Gedore and Dowidat. Next year we started getting the first of the Japanese vehicles like the Datsun Bluebird. New spanners and sockets ordered - mostly Minimax with some Gedore.
    Still got them today.
