    Default Skewed Fillister Plane?

Hello everyone, i recently bought this plane with a small lot of other old tools at auction, and i was just wondering if anyone could tell me what type of plane it is and whether there's something missing from it?

I think you are missing the outrigger thingy. It goes through those holes with wedges holding it in place. A fence I guess it is.

    Yep.

They're handsome those wedged arm planes but one very old sash fillister like yours that I was given, has a blade that is too soft to be used. I'd try sharpening the iron and seeing what the steel's like before committing too much time to restoring it.

Also, not knowing what work you do, I haven't found many uses for a sash fillister.

    Cheers
...I'll just make the other bits smaller.

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely give sharpening it a go, though after reading up on sash fillisters and their uses i don't think i'll ever really have much of a use for it...i suppose its just a purdy thing

Wow Fudo , I just had a close look at your plane . It looks like a Rosewood version!!
probably a user made plane by the look of it , check for any maker stamps

That's very nice if it is . Bazillion Rosewood planes were made , in all sorts , and they sell for a lot more than the standard beech planes .
Proper BRW will have a nice smell about it , no smell and it,s not BRW but something that looks like it .

I think you're right about it being Brazilian rosewood, as it certainly smells closer to a rosewood than any other type of wood i've worked with/smelled...
At the very least, if its not brazilian, i'm pretty sure its from the dalbergia family.

I can't find any makers marks on it, although 'Gibson' is stamped into both ends (i'm assuming its a former owner rather than an established maker though).

The bigger square and the marking gauge i bought along with it both appear to be brazilian to my eyes too...

It you get it tuned up its a pleasure to use. The skewed iron has the shaving curving nicely out the side and keeps the fence tight to the edge for you. (assuming it worked like the one I had) .
