    Default I & H Sorby Chisel identification

    Hi Guys,

I picked up a few chisels today in a market in Maldon in Vic. The makers mark on this one in particular says I & H Sorby and i am assuming it is a mortice chisel but upon further inspection, i am not sure as it seems quite short. I am not sure if this due to use or whether it has a different purpose. I was wondering if anyone couldshed a little light on this find.

    Thankyou in advance,

    Col

I'm pretty sure those chisels should have another 120mm or so of blade length. Maybe a previous owner bent it so badly trying to lever out chips in a deep mortise they busted it and somebody sharpened the stump?

I would think the original chisel might have been laminated and what is left might be just soft iron and not much use?

Here's some pics of a similar chisel. This one is a Ward and is 13.5mm wide. I'm not sure I've ever used it, I seldom need a mortise that width.

Looking at the edge I doubt it is laminated, so yours probably isn't either.

Thanks so much Fuzzie, i think that you're dead on. Ill admit i am dissapointed i didnt figure it out before i bought it but at least i know what to look for in the future. I have just been using a normal chisel to clean my mortises out and when i broke the tip off and had to regrind and sharpen, I will look forward to using some of the other mortise chisels i got and do it properly.

    Thanks again

    Col
