spear and jackson tenon saws
I have an old Spear and Jackson iron backed Tenon saw, split nuts, open handle and the best I find is that it was made around 1918. The blade is 10" long with what looks like 16 TPI
Can anybody throw more light on it or know where I can get any info on the company?Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. — Pablo Picasso

Wikipedia has a little bit of the company history.

They were always a well regarded tool maker in the UK.

Hello Hughie,
I have a reprint copy of a S&J 1918 catalogue showing your back saw as being either a #196 with bright steel back or a #197 blued back. Please see attached image.
Your saw was of a lesser quality than their 'Mermaid' brand though still fully warranted.
Another reference book states 'one of the earliest saw makers established as Love & Spear in 1760' later becoming Spear & Jackson in1833
The stamp on the back was first recorded being used as about 1880.
Once cleaned up and sharpened it should make a nice dovetail saw for you.
Hope all this is of some help to you.
Graham.
