    Default Stanley #5, good find?

Hi all, put a cheeky $25 bid on an old plane and ended up winning it. In the photos it looked a bit beaten up, but I was just after a user jack, nothing special.

I managed to fix the handle by splicing in a new bit of timber and shaping it to suit.

When inspecting the iron, it actually looks like a sweetheart, little heart decal just visible.

Anyway, I reckon it came up OK, works well

    Cheers!

Looks good. Once you've tuned it, a plane like that should give you years of solid service

Looks like a good ~1920s USA Stanley. Should be good quality from that era. Have you worked out what "type" it is (looks like maybe a type #13)?

Yeah that's what it looks like to me too. I used the type dating flowchart and it suggested type 13.

Quite happy with the purchase, I had actually forgotten about it, I put the initial bid on not long after it was listed, and there were no other bidders. So I got the 'you won' message from eBay, and thought to myself 'Ugh, what did I buy now?'.

I used a bit of redgum from the firewood pile. Used shellac to finish it. I mixed a drop of Japan black with a small amount of the shellac and put a coat on the redgum section to subdue and darken the colour slightly. Then went over the whole thing with a couple of coats of shellac only. Got a pretty good match I think.

I think if I repair another tote, I'll just cut it off square next time! I matched the angle of the break to preserve as much of the original timber as possible. I took off just enough to get a flat surface to join the new timber to. Made clamping an interesting endeavour. Was a fun learning experience though. Have had fun doing up a couple of planes. I really enjoy taking that first shaving after fettling them and sharpening to 16K. Think I have a problem...

    Welcome to the asylum.
Prognosis is that you will acquire 1 more plane thane enough and fettle them all. Then you will start making stuff with them and discover that you have too many (and sell them off to newcomers with the disease)
    Cheers

    I thought as much.

I'll have to give this 'making stuff' a go one day. Sounds like an interesting concept.
