    Question Stanley? 65 Spokeshave

I picked up this Stanley?? spokeshave of eBay the other week and I am just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this. Its a far bit different than the other Stanley 65 that I own (Type 1). The length is still 9 1/2 Inches the Fences are much smaller and each fence has a L or R and a B cast into the underside. I can't see any obvious signs of modification but I am assuming that it may have been.

At this stage the screw holding the cap Iron in place is seized up so haven't been able to get a good look at the blade.

I've got the one with the larger fences as well. Maybe this one was user modified for a special job? The grooves in the sole certainly don't look original given that they hit the cap iron screw

That is a Stanley #65 Chamfer spokeshave.

    It is for chamfering edges.

    Regards from Perth

We know that, this one looks like it's had some work done to it though

I have since manged to get the blade out.... It has definitely been modified....... I can't see where the fences have been modified though..... I would say they have.... albeit a very good job. I gave it a go on the edge of a bit of pine and it produces a neat little chamfer with a groove down the centre. It needs a bit of tuning though. I really like the look of the edge and am now thinking of a project that I can use it on.

I haven't tuned it up yet...but here is the cut that it does now and also a drawing as to what I think it should look like. I am wondering if it's for some sort of glazing Bead.

I have visitors this weekend so probably won't have too much time to do any tuning. It's not that easy to use. I found it seemed to work better if I put a normal chamfer on first and then cut the final shape with this tool.

    Certainly looks modified.
Your number 2 pic shows the shape of the blade.
I thought it might have been for a curved moulding.

Looks like the shave has been modified to create a profile designed to hold an index or name card on a shelf or edge located at around waist height.

Thanks Ian... However I think it has to be for a curved molding of some sort.....There would be no need to shorten the fences for a straight molding..... I did a bit of research and found a glass bead mold that matched this shape... So am thinking the modifier may have had a glass panels with curved tops????? Just a guess...as one would never really know... could have been a pattern maker as well. anyway an interesting shave to add to the collection.
