Stanley Plane Dating Charts
A simple question.
Do the charts for dating Stanley planes (as based on Patrick Leach's work) apply to all countries or just to those planes stamped 'Made in the USA'?Dave . . .

As elanjacobs says, it applies to USA made Stanleys, not UK nor Aussie Stanleys. I think Canadian Stanleys may follow the dating type studies.

Thanks for your response - I had my suspicions that was the case.

It's plausible, just depends which one you have and what condition it's in.
The No 4 is pretty common, so it'd need to be one of the very early models and in top condition (basically never used) to get that kind of money.

I think I saw a team pick an old Stanley Compass plane on Bargain Hunt a couple of weeks ago. I didn't see what it sold for, no TV at the dinner table here. There are a few Stanley 113s on ebay for up to four figure prices.

I hope there's a decimal point in the middle, 4 figures for a 113 is insane, especially since the 20 is by far a better plane.
The most I've paid for a plane was five hundred and something for an 85 (not to use, for the collection)

Tell him he's dreamin'
According to "The Stanley Little Big Book (2006)", it's a Type 8a and worth a few hundred in mint condition.
Either the seller has no idea, or is preying on the gullible.

That's not a Stanley plane.
Different floral pattern on front knob/adjuster plus the twist in the lateral.

The Type 8a had that 4-lobe pattern on the front knob. The pictures in the book aren't clear enough to compare the lateral lever though
According to Patrick Leach (aka the fountain of all Stanley knowledge), it was generally used on planes that Stanley made for hardware firms (source: The Superior Works - Patrick's Blood & Gore: Planes #90 - #100 )

Thanks for that additional info.
If Stanley made it for another company like Keen Cutter does this mean it's not a Stanley plane.

Interesting question.
I would consider a Keen Kutter by Stanley to be a Stanley plane. But I wouldn't consider a KK4 to be quite up to Stanley 604 value. I believe KK planes by Stanley were based on Stanley bedrocks - but I don't know if they were a budget bedrock, or full standard. Lets face it - part of the value of a bedrock is the 'Stanley' name - otherwise an old Stanley bedrock wouldn't sell for as much as a new Lie-Nielsen (for similar money, I'd rather have a Lie-Nielsen).
