Stenner MAE Spindle Moulder
Hi all,
Well I think I might be developing the foster home for Stenner machinery (only the small guys, no room for the later big brothers).
Saw this item on eBay, eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d and my rational mind was saying don't buy, as I recently aquired a Wadkin EQ (the 4 Speed) spindle moulder with a lot of the accessories, (more on that later when I get the Stenner ABM finished). Melbourne Matty was even nice enough to bring it to my attention, in case I had overlooked it, and eventually I had definatley decided I would just have to let it go.
However I saw absolutely no reason not to go and have a look at it and take some photos, after all I might not see one again for a while (the only other photo I had seen of a Stenner MAE spindle moulder was a thumbnail size photo with very little detail).

The first thing I noticed was the motor (a dead ringer for the table saw motor, just mounted differently and vented). I then realised that at the very least this machine was a perfect candidate for transplant parts, should anything go wrong with the table saw in the near future, same motor, same contactor, and a replacement on/off button with modern mushroom stop (the last piece I need to complete the table saw).
In the end it finished at $152.50 and at that price I didn't want to risk it getting scrapped or poorly treated (I know its not rational, and I need help).
At the moment my focus remains with the table saw and then next step is the Wadkin EQ, so this one will probably stay in the corner for a bit.
Below is a snipit from the 1955 catalogue about the MAE:

THE ONLY REMAINING DOCUMENTATION ON THIS MACHINE (I say hoping someone will prove me wrong).
Here are some photos (having the Wadkin EQ close at hand, I found it interesting comparing the similarities and differences):

Obviously the switch has been replaced, and I am not too sure if the fence is original?
Now all I need is the Stenner BL Chain and Chisel Mortiser.
Cheers,
Camo

Hey guys,
Thanks so much for the kind words. Keep your eyes posted for around 2020, when I finally get around to cleaning this machine up (too many pies not enough fingers, and I am way too slow at getting these machines cleaned up).
details of spindle lever.jpg
It is all very similar to the Wadkin EQ (in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the parts would be interchangeable). The spindle locking lever is at the bottom (see photo above), brake is at the top left, height adjustment lock, left middle and the rise and fall (different to the EQ, similar design as the Stenner ABM) is on the right. I really like this machine and I would go as far as to say in some ways I like it over the EQ (mainly the fact that due to the motor design, there is very little area exposed out the back and would almost push right up against the wall, but I must admit the bell shaped dome cover on the EQ is more visually appealing).
When I get the EQ setup I will be adding something to protect the cast dome door (when I am using it). I can imagine a lot of these have been broken in the past with things being place on the back of the table and dropping off.
The main thing with the EQ that trumps everything else is the fact that I managed to get the 4 speed model (and has all the extra parts), the EQ will be the next project (probably 2015 at the rate I am going with the Stenner ABM). If anyone would like I will try to get some photos of the Wadkin EQ and list is as a separate post.
Cheers,
Camo

Nice unit Camoz.
Does the Stenner use an oil mist daily squirt bearing lubrication system like the EQ?
Are the loose pieces interchangeable with the EQ?
Makes you wonder which came first;them looking so alike.
Cheers

Hey Tony,
To be honest at this stage I havn't had a chance to look too closely at it. I have found I have got a bit spread out on my projects, resulting in lots of starts and no finishes. I managed to get the hafco scroll saw finished now, and close to finishing the Stenner table saw (waiting on a part of the fence support to be welded). The big downside with the Stenner is you can't just download a manual like I could with the EQ.
I have wondered myself when Stenner started manufacturing the MAE, I am purely guessing, but I think the EQ is the original. The only details I have that dates it is a Stenner catalogue dated 1955 which shows the ABM (table saw), the MAE (spindle moulder) and the BL (the chisel mortiser Jack has), among other machines.
Cheers,
camo
