Very strange "rebate" plane...
Saw THIS plane on Ebay this morning; it's described as a "double side rebate plane". I have never seen anything like it before and can't figure out any possible use for it; but as the blades appear to be worn down nubs someone must have used it nearly to death. I have copied the pictures below to spare people having to use the link to the Ebay site; I have no connection with the seller nor do I wish to purchase this item, I'm just baffled as to why it even exists...
Has anyone ever seen one before? I can only assume it was made for a specific one-off purpose

Its a user made side rebate plane. for working the side of a rebate to open it up, or to make a dovetailed rebate...Many commercial makers offered a comparable pair or single plane for both options. Left and right to enable working with the grain.
Stanley made a pair #98 #99, also a double #79, Sargent made a double, Preston made quite a few very nice ones.
The seller doesn't know much about them.....price is from the optimist price guide.
Here is one
and another
Stanley pair,

Doh, of course it is! I didn't visualise it working on its side because it looked so massive; even though you've enlightened me I still think it would be a handful due to it's size. I guess the blades aren't that worn after all because it would be expected to slip into fairly narrow grooves.
Thank you Peter; I was hoping someone of your experience would spot this thread and provide the answer. I don't recall ever seeing any form of metal side rebate plane with skewed blades; that would be very handy for adjusting trench widths.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Stanley no 79 is a double sided one with a depth stop. Got one in the plane box somewhere.
